I like the fact that simple shapes have names like "triangle" and "diamond". I sometimes put collections of shapes on the same plane, treating the painting itself like a table where these items are sitting. This creates an almost clumsy illusion in a shallow space. The depth of the illusion is similar to depth of the canvas support.

Repetitious brush strokes allow forms to emerge from the inside out so that their character is evenly embedded in the picture plane. I like to let patterns fall apart. In choosing colors for the pattern I am loosening the structure optically. Each segment of the pattern is generated with a different motion and intensity until the whole pattern is skewed.

Color is the structure. Color relationships fuel my decisions. The choices are personally as well as optically driven. I am interested in the cultural associations that arise out of the color mixing process. Sometimes patterns look like the background from a video game and the colors match the clothes I am wearing.
